About:

The New Art School Modality explores and brings to life new forms of teaching, learning, art production, and impact. The school is grounded in an ethos of collaboration, experimentation, and improvisation.&#38;nbsp;
The New Art School Modality offers a revised version of the art school model, methods, and procedures. It is conceived as a different take on, or an alternative approach to, art school education, one that has fewer guard rails and institutional protocols. There’s intentionally less hand-holding and the apparatus is reduced, all of this as a nod to prior historical moments when making art and being an artist were less reliant on costly infrastructures.

The New Art School Modality will instantiate courses at various "perches" worldwide. Courses are hybrid, online and in-person. Unlike other art schools, it is not place based or centric.The New Art School Modality evolves from the Black Arts Movement School Modality, also founded by Romi Crawford, which registers the pedagogical tendencies regularly evidenced in the practices of black arts movement practitioners from the 1960s and 1970s.

	
Key Interventions:

	The course topics and themes are actively rooted in a revised set of values for arts education and learning (underrecognized art histories and forms; collective teaching; intergenerational and collaborative methods).

The primary currency is not the course credit or degree. Instead, the school offers opportunities to take part in and produce outcome projects (being part of an exhibition, publication, civic project, etc.) that build unique professional experiences.

One of the purposes of the New Art School Modality is to produce an affordable option for arts-related content. Primarily underwritten by philanthropic and institutional partners, the school is no or low cost to students.
The school takes place at different partner/hub institutions (somewhat nomadic, fugitive, fluid).

The school’s community is made up of students, scholars, artists, musicians, designers, business leaders, curators, artisans, and creatives from across sectors and across the globe.The school centers  expertise, knowledge, and ways of learning about art that emerge from a range of cultural, artistic, and intellectual contexts.&#38;nbsp;

Leadership:Romi Crawford is founder and president of the New Art School Modality. She is an art historian, professor, writer, curator and founder of the the Black Arts Movement School Modality.

It offers an opportunity to imagine new ways to lead in the context of various arts ecosystems and environments (galleries, non-profits, museums, schools, etc.).

February 2025Join us for the NASM “Reaction/Revision” Sessions, a unique opportunity for in-depth, personalized feedback on your artistic practice. 	This NASM and documenta 16 course explores moments across time (past and present)—and across cultures—when groups overcome deep divisions and come together to solve shared challenges. By examining these stories, participants will consider what it takes to bridge divides, build trust, and create new possibilities through collaboration. 
This course is free of cost.

Dr. Toyin Ajao
Dr. Toyin Ajao, known as Moon Goddess, Gypsy Oriṣa and Dr Witch, engages with the world as a public scholar, Afro-feminist activist and an interdisciplinary researcher-practitioner. She is the Director and Restorative Healing Researcher and Practitioner at Ìmọ́lẹ̀ of Afrika Centre ( ìAfrika), a Wholistic Wellbeing Consultant at Moon Goddess Consults and a Research Associate of the African Leadership Centre (ALC), King’s College London. Her work intersects with intergenerational healing, economic justice, environmental regeneration, posthuman security,healing justice, conflict transformation, systems change, and visionary/intersectional feminism.

Through what she calls the school of life, she is in a limitless, polymathic pursuit of knowledge and wisdom across the natural and social sciences, arts, humanities, and holistic healing traditions. Through her formal educational journey, she holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Pretoria, an MA in Conflict, Security and Development from King’s College London, and a BSc in Accounting from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. She is currently pursuing a PGCert in Online Learning and Teaching at the Afe Babalola Centre for Transnational Education, King’s College London.

Ajao’s lifelong goal is to nurture the inner transformation of Africans for outward impact through
relational repair, cultural shift, and systemic change. She adopts a neo-ancient, integrative approach that blends Ubuntu philosophy, healing justice frameworks, critical consciousness, conflict transformation, neuroscience, and Afro-feminism for intergenerational and collective healing. Her core restorative, somatic tools for embodied transformation include breathwork, movement flow, meditation, storytelling, and healing circles. She actively resists grind culture by cultivating intentional spaces for rest, renewal, and replenishment. A devoted cat lover (purrent), she enjoys spending quality time with her furmily, Mickey and Gypsy.

Nadine Migesel
Nadine Migesel is a German-Palestinian with Israeli and German citizenship. She has family in Haifa and Tel Aviv and lived there herself for almost a year in 2013.
After studying Sustainable Design, she became a self-employed tattoo artist. After ten years in Cologne and working as a tattoo artist in her own studio - Atelier Noir nu - she is now moving to Berlin.

Besides her studio, she enjoys working on various other projects: feminism, sustainability, socio-political issues, and queer topics are of particular interest to her. Due to her multicultural background, she engaged extensively with the Middle East conflict and Israeli, Palestinian, and queer culture in her adopted homeland - even during her studies - through her art. For the past five years, Nadine has used her Instagram channel to address political issues and use her reach for activism.

Since October 7, 2023, she has also been a co-founder of the Cologne-based initiative "Palestinians and Jews for Peace." The group, comprised of Jewish and Palestinian friends, has already organized two demonstrations in Cologne and advocates for a nuanced discourse on the war in Israel and Gaza, as well as a shift in narratives in Germany.
Since the beginning of 2024, Nadine has been working for "Gesellschaft im Wandel/Society in Transition" as a mentor for the "Trialoge" project.
