About:

The New Art School Modality explores and brings to life new forms of teaching, learning, art production, and impact. The school is grounded in an ethos of collaboration, experimentation, and improvisation.&#38;nbsp;
The New Art School Modality offers a revised version of the art school model, methods, and procedures. It is conceived as a different take on, or an alternative approach to, art school education, one that has fewer guard rails and institutional protocols. There’s intentionally less hand-holding and the apparatus is reduced, all of this as a nod to prior historical moments when making art and being an artist were less reliant on costly infrastructures.

The New Art School Modality will instantiate courses at various "perches" worldwide. Courses are hybrid, online and in-person. Unlike other art schools, it is not place based or centric.The New Art School Modality evolves from the Black Arts Movement School Modality, also founded by Romi Crawford, which registers the pedagogical tendencies regularly evidenced in the practices of black arts movement practitioners from the 1960s and 1970s.

	
Key Interventions:

	The course topics and themes are actively rooted in a revised set of values for arts education and learning (underrecognized art histories and forms; collective teaching; intergenerational and collaborative methods).

The primary currency is not the course credit or degree. Instead, the school offers opportunities to take part in and produce outcome projects (being part of an exhibition, publication, civic project, etc.) that build unique professional experiences.

One of the purposes of the New Art School Modality is to produce an affordable option for arts-related content. Primarily underwritten by philanthropic and institutional partners, the school is no or low cost to students.
The school takes place at different partner/hub institutions (somewhat nomadic, fugitive, fluid).

The school’s community is made up of students, scholars, artists, musicians, designers, business leaders, curators, artisans, and creatives from across sectors and across the globe.The school centers  expertise, knowledge, and ways of learning about art that emerge from a range of cultural, artistic, and intellectual contexts.&#38;nbsp;

Leadership:Romi Crawford is founder and president of the New Art School Modality. She is an art historian, professor, writer, curator and founder of the the Black Arts Movement School Modality.

Examining Arts Leadership: History, Theories and Creative Breakthroughs
October 10 - November 14, 2025Friday 10-12:30 pm ET sessionHybrid format (@ Hauser and Wirth New York and Virtual)&#38;nbsp;The “Examining Arts Leadership: History, Theories and Creative Breakthroughs” Course will take place on Fridays from 10am-12:30 pm EST from October 10 - November 14, 2025. This NASM course will explore creative arts leadership as well as current and historical case studies. It offers an opportunity to imagine new ways to lead in the context of various arts ecosystems and environments (galleries, non-profits, museums, schools, etc.).

“Reaction &#38;amp; Revision” Faculty will work one-on-one with a single student to address their work and practice over the course of three sessions that are 45 minutes each. These sessions will take place between October 10 and December 7, 2025 at set dates/times.

February 2025Join us for the NASM “Reaction/Revision” Sessions, a unique opportunity for in-depth, personalized feedback on your artistic practice. Designed for alumni of Festac’77, Making New Monuments, and Arts Writing/Writing About Art courses, these sessions provide a fresh approach to the traditional critique model.Faculty include Professor Hamza Walker (Curator, The Brick), Professor Tony Lewis (Artist), Professor Laura Letinsky (Photographer and Artist), and Professor Rebecca Matalon&#38;nbsp; (Curator, Houston CAMH).

Examining Arts LeadershipOctober 10 - November 14, 2025Time &#38;amp; Date: Fridays from 10am-12:30pm ESTHybrid (Virtual Via Zoom + Hauser &#38;amp; Wirth 18th Street)The “Examining Arts Leadership: History, Theories and Creative Breakthroughs” Course will take place on Fridays from 10am-12:30 pm EST from October 10 - November 14, 2025. This NASM course will explore creative arts leadership as well as current and historical case studies. It offers an opportunity to imagine new ways to lead in the context of various arts ecosystems and environments (galleries, non-profits, museums, schools, etc.).

	Sandra Jackson-Dumont is a curator, educator, and cultural strategist whose work critically reimagines the role of art museums in contemporary society. Recently appointed a Getty Research Institute Presidential Scholar, she brings a rigorous, interdisciplinary approach to questions of the canon, public engagement, and institutional transformation. As former Director and CEO of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles, she oversaw the operational development of an 11-acre cultural campus, including a 300,000-square-foot museum dedicated to narrative art as a catalyst for inclusive storytelling and civic dialogue.Her career spans leadership roles at several of the United States’ most prominent cultural institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Studio Museum in Harlem, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Seattle Art Museum. Across contexts, Jackson-Dumont has cultivated collaborations with contemporary artists, communities, and historical collections, foregrounding programs that challenge conventional museological frameworks and epistemologies.Her practice is distinguished by a commitment to equity, innovation, and relevance—principles that resonate with global debates on the future of cultural institutions. Through writing, lectures, and advisory engagements, Jackson-Dumont continues to shape international discourses on museum reform, offering critical insights for institutions seeking to foster inclusive, reflexive, and socially responsive cultural spaces.

	Mia Locks&#38;nbsp;is an independent curator&#38;nbsp;and Executive Director of Museums Moving Forward,&#38;nbsp;a research organization&#38;nbsp;devoted to envisioning and creating a more just museum sector by 2030. She was previously a curator at MoMA PS1, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; and The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA), where she organized exhibitions including the 2017 Whitney Biennial and Greater New York 2015. She has also organized solo exhibitions with artists including Math Bass, Samara Golden, Miranda July, Ulrike Müller, and&#38;nbsp;Cauleen Smith.

	For more than two decades, I have worked with artists, curated exhibitions, directed institutions, and written in different styles to workshop ideas, share thoughts, and remember anecdotes. I have promoted artistic practices and histories that present original research, emotively engaging with a what if; with what hasn't been seen; with what is imperceptible, overshadowed or forgotten. My work has championed projects at the intersection of art and education. This involves, for example, organizing projects with an intersectional approach, however subtle, as much as testing different forms of public engagement. I love art and exhibitions.

From from 2018 to 2023, Sofía Hernández Chong Cuy (she/her) was director of Kunstinstituut Melly in Rotterdam, the institution formerly known as Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art. In 2023, she was also a Mellon Visiting Lecturer in the Art History Department at CUNY Graduate Center in New York. Sofía regularly participates in jury panels and advisory committees. Among these are the 2023 Frieze Tate Acquisition Fund in London, the 2018 Hugo Boss Prize at the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Montblanc de la Culture Arts Patronage Award in 2017, and the 55th Venice Biennial in 2013. Since 2022, she is a board member of International Manifesta Foundation.

Previously, Sofía was the curator of contemporary art at Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros, a foundation with offices in New York and Caracas. She has also been director at Museo Tamayo in Mexico City; held curatorial positions in New York at Art in General and Americas Society; and worked as the artistic director and chief curator of the 9a Bienal do Mercosul (2013) in Porto Alegre. Additionally, Sofía has guest-curated exhibitions at several spaces and museums internationally, including CCA in Vilnius, Kadist Art Foundation in Paris, and MALBA in Buenos Aires.

Sofía was born and raised in Baja California, Mexico.

	Justin Randolph Thompson is an artist, cultural facilitator and&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;educator born in Peekskill, NY in ’79. Based between Italy and the US since 1999. Thompson is a recipient of a 2024 MAP Fund Award, a 2022 Creative Capital Award, a 2020 Italian Council Research Fellowship, a Louis Comfort Tiffany Award, a Franklin Furnace Fund Award, a Visual Artist Grant from the Fundacion Marcelino Botin and an Emerging Artist Fellowship from Socrates Sculpture Park amongst others. His work and performances have been exhibited widely in institutions including The Whitney Museum of American Art, the Centro de Arte Reina Sofia and The American Academy in Rome and are part of numerous collections including The Studio Museum in Harlem, and the Museo MADRE. His life and work seek to deepen the discussions around socio-cultural stratification and the arrogance of permanence by employing fleeting temporary communities as monuments and fostering projects that connect academic discourse, social activism and DIY networking strategies in annual and biennial gathering, sharing and gestures of collectivity. 


Thompson is Co-Founder and Director of Black History Month Florence and The Recovery Plan, a research center dedicated to a multi-faceted exploration of Black histories and cultures in the context of Italy. In ten editions of Black History Month Florence and five years of The Recovery Plan, the initiatives have coordinated, curated, facilitated and promoted over 1000 events, with 13 ongoing research platforms.
